Tuesday publication post! In this latest work from Matthew N. Gordon, Laura S. Junkers, Jack S. Googasian, Jette K. Mathiesen, Xun Zhan, David Gene Morgan, Kirsten M. Ø. Jensen and Sara E. Skrabalak, the authors used the #PoseidonAX system to look at the formation of bismuth oxyhalides in real time using the electron microscope!
The fast nucleation of bismuth oxyhalides in aqueous solutions has long posed challenges for their controlled synthesis. But with a new single-source precursor, we’re slowing down the process, enabling deeper investigation through in situ X-ray total scattering and liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (LC-TEM) using the Poseidon AX platform.
By leveraging in situ pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, the authors tracked local atomic structures throughout the synthesis, while LC-TEM captured the real-time growth of individual BiOCl nanoparticles.
These insights, including the widened interlayer spacing observed in the emerging particles, help uncover key mechanisms behind BiOX nanostructure formation.
